problem

How might we help busy individuals cook an enjoyable meal efficiently in the kitchen?

focus
Many people feel they spend excessive time in the kitchen.
objectives
Efficient: Reduce time spent in the kitchen
Assist: Help users with cooking process
Space Conscious: Integrated with current products
Simple: Easy to learn

research

interviews
I began by interviewing 5 people who expressed a medium to high interest in cooking to identify the stress points in the cooking process
clean up
Users complained about the difficulty in scraping food off their pans
multitasking
It was challenging for some to handle more than one dish
ruining food
Interviewees sometimes overseason or burn their food
insight
People are busy and search for ways to shorten the cooking process

journey

insights
I mapped out the journey and applied a "think, feel, do" exercise to help me get into the mind of the users, I decided to focus on the cooking stage since it had the most pain points and opportunities.

research

pro chefs
In order to identify problems that professional chefs go through, I conducted an interview and read through cooking blogs.
Additionally, I watched cooking shows to identify where chefs under time pressure make mistakes.
misinformation
Some websites encourage time-saving behavior that ruins food. For example, washing a pan before it cools properly can warp the equipment and cause even heat distribution
multitasking
While watching chefs on the cooking show Chopped, their mistakes occurred when they couldn't keep track of every dish they were cooking
guesswork
In my interview, the cook shared he'd like something that'd eliminate the guesswork. Youtuber Pro Home Cooks shares his method to ensure his pan is hot enough by hovering a hand over a pan until it's uncomfortable.
insight
Through a combination of my research from my interviewees to my research from knowledgable cooks, it became apparent that to address this problem, I needed to create a device that can assist and inform

competition

After identifying which competitor products fulfilled my objectives, I searched through user reviews to identify potential improvements
potential improvements
  • Improved manual mode user experience
  • Freedom with choice of recipes
  • User customization
  • Freedom to use an induction-friendly cookware
  • Can help users multitask

ideations

product
My solution needed to fulfill my objectives and be versatile enough to explore the opportunities I identified in my research. For those reasons, I decided to go with a SMART stovetop system.
storyboarding
To help me take on a more human-centered approach to the problem, I storyboarded the experience for the user with and without the app. This exercise helped me realize I need to create an experience where the app isn't as relied on.
wireframe exploration
I explored several wireframes and asked my interviewees to test them out. Here’s some of their feedback:

brand

moodboard
why braun?
I want my users to feel confidence, serenity, and enjoyment and find that Braun’s branding values best meet that criteria
principles & direction
Some of Braun principles include minimalism, symmetry, and fluid geometry. While maintaining these principles, I created this moodboard to help evolve the brand to a modern aesthetic

introducing evosa

Evosa is a SMART system that functions as the ultimate kitchen assistant. Its purpose is to educate and guide users through the cooking process to ensure an efficient and effective cooking session

explore new recipes

Current SMART kitchen products limit users to the recipes in their app’s database. The Evosa app provides the user a variety of import options to make it easy for the user to try new recipes!

no guesswork

Users can cook new recipes confidently and multitask efficiently. Evosa will manage the burners and inform the user when a burner needs attention (on the app and the stove!)

cooking made easy

Setting up a cooking session is simple. The user simply adds the recipes they’d like to cook and Evosa handles the rest

independent

After users import recipes on the app, they have the option to start cooking sessions straight from the stovetop as well. Phone or no phone--it’s up to the user!

flexibility

In an ideal world, users can stay in the kitchen during the entire cooking session, but sometimes a user needs (or wants) to step out of the kitchen. Users have complete control over the time and temperature of their food, even in another room.
